Computer recycling?

This post isn't really related to anything in class, but I thought I would make use of the wealth of technological knowledge available via our blogosphere. So here's my issue: My dektop computer recently fell victim to a nasty virus that damaged either my hard drive and/or my motherboard. I could pay an exorbitant amount to have it fixed, but it is already 4 years old and at this point, I will probably just purchase a new laptop. I know I could just have my old comp disposed of, but does anyone have any use for it or know of any organizations that refurbish/recycle computers for future use? Open to comments and/or trackbacks!

TrackBacking

For those of you that are interested in trakbacking but were not able to attend Bud's session after class today, HERE is a link to the typepad help page that helped me to figure it out. It explains more clearly what trackbacking is all about and gives directions on how to enable it. I think everyone should check it out because it will really allow us to blog about more as a class utilizing more of a conversation format. I think this will be easier and more productive, rather than just making random postings. So check the link for more infor or I can tell you what I did : In a nutshell, in order to respond to someone's posting via trackbacking, Create a new post then click the Configure tab and go to Display. At the bottom of the display page, check the box that says "Allow Trackback Pings on by default" and check the second box if you want to receive an email when someone trackbacks your posts. Go back to the Post tab and create your post. There should be a box at the lower right hand corner of your new post that says "Send a Trackback to these addresses" This is where you copy and paste the trackback URL of the post you want to respond to....provided the post has trackbacks enabled, it should be at the bottom of their posting. Blog away, but don't forget to check the "Accept TrackBacks" box each time you blog so that we can all respond!

This comment is in reponse to the discussion spurred from the CBS news article posted by Professor Gibson. I agree with Bskool Bloggin's comments about the impact bloggers are having on the way media conglomerates are subject to even greater scrutiny. I do have to say though that I tend to disagree with what you said about smaller organizations having less credibility and therefore less responsibility to report factually (if that is indeed your argument). It seems to me that the larger the organization, the more they can get away with...but with the advent of blogging and increased consumer awareness, this seems to be changing. Here is a link to a movie I saw this summer called Outfoxed. According to the link, the movie "examines how media empires, led by Rupert Murdoch's Fox News, have been running a "race to the bottom" in television news. The film provides an in-depth look at Fox News and the dangers of ever-enlarging corporations taking control of the public's right to know." check it out if youre interested in this topic-Entertaining, yet frightening!

Initial thoughts

Not being the most technologically savvy individual in the class, I feel I stand to learn a lot from this class. Given how the first couple of days have gone, I am looking forward to learning more about the practicality and application of the topics we are addressing. I think the most important thing for me is going to be being able to step back from the nitty gritty of what we are learning and see the bigger picture and grasping the significance of the topic. So with that in mind, I found this explanation of RSS to be helpful
